An appeal to those who worked for and/or were associated with Dr.V Kurien and his institutions

It was a great experience meeting former colleagues, reliving memories of the past struggles, achievements and joyous moments during “Reminiscences 2020” held at NDDB Anand on 15 and 16 February 2020.

When we met in February 2020, none of us had an inkling of what was in store for us resulting in lockdown by the last week of March 2020.
Thanks to available technology many of us are still connected. I am sure most of us will remember the song Mrs Sumitra Roychowdhry sang at the commencement ceremony of the two day event.

I hope this finds you all healthy and safe.

During our meeting at Anand, I spoke about the need to collect stories and anecdotes of the time we spent at NDDB and other organizations of Dr V Kurien’s time.

Let me put in words once again my appeal for the same.

Years ago I read a quotation from an American Statesman, John W Gardner “History never looks like history when you are living through it”. It has stayed with me.

This statement makes a lot of sense in the context of organizations that were conceptualized, designed, developed and given a shape in and around Anand under the leadership of Dr.V. Kurien.

The personal and organizational transformations that each of us witnessed and experienced during our work life in those organizations have been amazing.

We were a part of the history in making. And the good news is that History has been made!

We are also at a stage in our lives when we don’t expect anything from the organizations that we worked for but only give if we have something to offer and that is needed.

What each of us besides many other worldly possessions and gifts have are our memories, our experiences and our stories.

So how do we share our memories, experiences and stories with each other as well with the larger audience outside our circle who would be interested?

S ome of us have been toying with the idea of writing a book on the organization and the “cause” that we worked for. We discussed a lot started and gave up several times over the years because we realized that at this age in our lives doing research, getting hold of authentic documents and narratives was a tremendously challenging task.

Obviously we were not up to it.

In the mean time I created a website VrikshaMandir.com

I posted some blogs of personal reminiscences and other articles in Hindi and English. Shri RK Nagar and Dr MPG Kurup joined in and they too have been contributing to this website. Very soon you will find articles from other old timers too appearing on this website. This gave rise to further churning “Manthan” and the “Book Writers” group finally decided that instead attempting to write a scholarly well researched book we should rather attempt a book of stories.

This is a request to all those who read this and are moved to contribute stories and anecdotes to please do so.

Given below are the guidelines for contributors along with a self declaration form. Language can be English, Hindi or any regional language. However, those sharing stories in regional languages may send a translation in Hindi and/or English.

Please send your contributions along with self declaration form duly filled in at sk@vrikshamandir.com

Those who wish to share their contributions in a hard copy format may do so at the address given in the guidelines for contributors.

I will share selected stories on the above website and later if this experiment succeeds we might come out with a book or may be who knows even more!
Loving regards,

Shailendra
