Chennakeshava Temple , Belur , located on the Banks of rivulet Yogachi , a tributary of River Hemavathi.
This Temple is considered the shining jewel of Hoysala Temples , is in Belur Taluk , Hassan District , Karnataka State .
The Temple is famous for its architecture (Hoysala-Dravidian ) , art work , scriptures carved on the granite walls and exquite granite sculptures !
Built by King Vishnuvardhana : in 1117 , it took 103 years by several generations of hoysala kings to complete : the temple structure as well as the art work .
Hoysala empire built some 1500 Temples /mostly Hindu , but also several Jain Temples too !
Hoysala Empire ruled most of what is now the state of Karnataka : the empire flourished for some four centuries (10th to 14th century AD ) , was always subordinate to western Chalukya empire and finally merged in Vijaya Nagara Empire.
